Slack vs Ano: Which fits your AI-native team?

#comparison #slack-alternative

Slack is the default team chat for a reason. It is fast, familiar, and almost everyone you hire already knows how to use it. If your team’s primary mode is human-to-human communication with the occasional bot integration, Slack is hard to beat.

Ano is a different shape. It is team chat built specifically for AI-native teams, including engineering, product, marketing, and sales, where humans and AI agents work together in channels. The chat interface looks familiar, but different things happen inside.

This guide is the honest, side-by-side comparison. No “we are better at everything” pitch. Just the facts.

The Core Difference

  • Slack is a chat tool. It is where you discuss work. If you need to do AI work, you usually leave Slack to open a browser tab or run commands in a private terminal window.
  • Ano is an AI-native workspace. It is where you discuss work and execute it. With Claude Code built into every channel, your team can run commands, execute scripts, and let AI coworkers handle tasks directly in the conversation.

Where Slack Wins

  • Ecosystem maturity. Slack has spent over a decade building its app ecosystem. If a business tool has a chat integration, they build for Slack first.
  • Onboarding friction. Almost every modern hire already has Slack on their resume. There is zero learning curve.
  • Traditional teams. For teams who do not use any modern AI tooling or run automated workflows, Slack’s classic interface remains the default choice.

Where Ano Wins

  • AI as a first-class participant. Coworkers are named workspace members, not bots hiding in a tray. They show up in the member list with a COWORKER badge, get @mentioned, and work alongside you.
  • Shell in every channel (⌘J). Press ⌘J and Claude Code opens with the active channel’s context loaded. Execute campaigns, run CLIs, pull metrics, or query workspace integrations. Output pipes straight back into the channel so the whole team sees the trial.
  • Accessibility for non-engineers. You don’t need to be a developer to use the shell. Marketing can run campaign templates, sales can pull CRM metrics, and support can triage tickets using Stripe, HubSpot, or Notion CLIs. Claude Code does the heavy typing for you.
  • No markup on tokens. You bring your own Claude Code account. Ano runs the chat infrastructure and does not charge a premium or markup on Anthropic’s compute. It is free for the entire company.
  • Local-first speed. Messages live encrypted on your machine. The app launches instantly, offline mode is fully functional, and search is near-instant because it is indexed locally.

Pick Slack if…

  • You need the deepest possible catalog of third-party SaaS app integrations.
  • Your team has no plans to integrate AI tools or use CLIs for daily work.
  • You are already on a paid Slack contract and the friction of switching outweighs the productivity gains.

Pick Ano if…

  • Your team is already running Claude Code or ChatGPT in private browser windows and terminals all day.
  • You want non-technical members (marketing, sales, support) to use CLIs for HubSpot, Notion, Stripe, and Jira without learning terminal syntax.
  • You want AI agents to behave like actual teammates with shared channel context, rather than isolated chatbots.
  • You want a private, local-first chat workspace built by Ano Instruments AB (Sweden) and hosted in the EU or US.

Questions People Ask (FAQs)

Can non-engineers really use Ano?

Absolutely. Many non-technical teammates use CLIs for tools like HubSpot, Stripe, Notion, Intercom, or Figma every day in Ano. Sales can pull deal data, marketing can launch campaigns, and support can track tickets. The beauty of the integrated Claude Code shell is that Claude does the typing. You just ask for what you need in plain English.

Can Ano replace Slack completely?

For AI-native startups and teams that work text-first, yes. Channels, threads, DMs, search, file sharing, mobile, the parts your team already knows by heart, plus Claude Code in every channel. Voice and video are not in the current beta, so teams that live in huddles keep that tool. For larger organizations, some choose to keep Slack for general company announcements and run Ano for the product, marketing, and operations teams where the actual daily work gets done.

How does the Claude Code integration work?

In any channel, pressing ⌘J opens an in-app shell powered by Claude Code. It has access to your local environment, your workspace’s tools, and the channel’s context. The command and the result are posted inline in the channel so the team can see what ran.

Do we need a Claude subscription to use Ano?

Yes. You bring your own Claude Code account. Ano uses your account directly to talk to Anthropic. We do not resell tokens or add a markup. That is how we keep the workspace chat infrastructure completely free for your entire company.

How are integrations powered in Ano?

Under the hood, Ano uses Pipedream. Instead of reinventing custom OAuth connections and rate limits for 2,000 different business tools, we use Pipedream’s battle-tested workflow platform. This means you get secure, one-click connections to GitHub, Linear, Stripe, Notion, HubSpot, and others on day one.

Is our workspace data secure?

We use TLS in transit and encryption at rest. Your Claude Code prompts and tool inputs travel directly from your local client to Anthropic under your own credentials; our servers never see them. Workspace chat messages are hosted on our infrastructure in the EU or US so multi-device sync and search work. End-to-end encryption is currently on our roadmap.
